Talent management practices and employee performance In water and sanitation companies in machakos county, Kenya.
(KCA University, 2025) Munyao, Christinah M.
Employee performance is vital for the effective provision of water and sanitation services across Machakos County. Regional Water and Sanitation Companies have consistently faced issues such as high employee turnover and reduced productivity, which hinder operational efficiency. Although formal talent management policies are in place, significant gaps remain in their execution, especially regarding training for equipment upgrades and technological advancements. This research examined how talent management practices impact employee performance in Water and Sanitation Companies in Machakos County. It focused on evaluating the effects of recruitment practices, talent retention, training and development, and career advancement on employee performance. The study employed a descriptive research design. A census sampling method was utilized to include all 133 employees from seven key departments: Water Supply, Sanitation, Finance and Revenue Collection, Customer Service, Technical Service, Planning and Development, and Human Resources. Data was collected using questionnaires. The questionnaires yielded both qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative information from open-ended questions was analyzed through thematic analysis and presented in a narrative format. Quantitative data were processed using SPSS version 26 and summarized using descriptive statistics like frequency distributions, means, percentages, and standard deviations. Furthermore, inferential statistical methods, including Pearson correlation coefficients and multivariate regression analysis, were used to investigate relationships among the variables. Findings were displayed using tables, pie charts, graphs, and figures. The study found that recruitment practices, talent retention, training and development, and career advancement all had a positive and significant impact on employee performance. Following these results, the study recommends that Water and Sanitation Companies in Machakos County should establish structured mentorship programs for new hires, promote top performers to enhance morale and collaboration, and ensure timely and competitive compensation that meets industry benchmarks. These strategies to reduce turnover rates, increase employee satisfaction, and improve overall productivity and service delivery in the sector.
